Cuba hit by a major earthquake on Sunday
At 11:49 local time, a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook Cuba, shortly after the previous 5.9-magnitude quake. The 14 km-deep epicenter was located some 40 km from Bartolomé Masó, in the south of the island state.
Felt as far away as Miami
The earthquake was felt as far away as Miami. Cuba has been hard hit by major hurricane Rafael, category 3, in recent days, and a severe power cut has made life difficult for residents. Rafael made landfall near Playa Majana, in the province of Artemisa, on Wednesday. The following morning, the whole country was plunged into darkness.
There was no tsunami warning at the time of writing. Three tremors of magnitude 4.6 or less were recorded in the following hours.
This is the second major earthquake for the region in less than five years: on January 28, 2020, a magnitude 7.7 quake rocked the Caribbean, between Cuba and Jamaica. Many roads were damaged.
