Glass bottles can usually travel in checked luggage when the contents are allowed; wrap each bottle separately and protect it from impact and leaks.
BAGGAGE · GLASS · ALCOHOL
Large liquid bottles normally travel in checked baggage unless they qualify under duty-free rules. Good protection must address both breakage and leakage.
Will a glass bottle explode or break in checked luggage?
A properly sealed commercial glass bottle does not normally fail just because it is in an aircraft hold. The practical risks are impact, crushing and leakage. Protect the neck and base, wrap each bottle separately, prevent movement and keep bottles away from suitcase walls and wheels.
Cabin or checked baggage?
| Bottle | Usual option | Check |
|---|---|---|
| More than 100 ml purchased before security | Checked baggage | Product, alcohol content, airline and weight rules. |
| Container of 100 ml or less | Cabin may be possible | Liquids bag and prohibited-item rules. |
| Duty-free purchase | Cabin under applicable conditions | Sealed bag, receipt and connections. |
| Empty glass bottle | Cabin or checked baggage | Cleanliness, sharp edges and protection. |
Alcohol rules are separate from customs
Aviation rules determine whether alcohol may travel safely. Canadian customs rules determine the personal exemption and what must be declared on return. A bottle bought duty free still has to be declared and counts toward the applicable allowance.
Reliable packing method
- Inspect the seal and cap.
- Place the bottle in a strong leak-resistant bag.
- Protect the neck and base.
- Wrap the complete bottle with padding.
- Keep every bottle separate.
- Place bottles away from suitcase walls, corners and wheels.
- Fill empty spaces so nothing moves.
- Weigh the suitcase before departure.
A fragile sticker does not replace proper packing. Assume the suitcase may be stacked, dropped or turned on its side.
Keep these items separate
- Passport and travel documents.
- Essential medication.
- Electronics and power banks.
- Valuables.
- Clothing needed immediately after arrival.
If a bottle breaks
Open the suitcase in an easy-to-clean area, wear shoes and use gloves if available. Photograph damage before removing items, watch for hidden glass and discard any food contaminated by fragments.
