Travellers often encounter cats around resort gardens and dogs near streets or beaches. Helping responsibly means protecting both the animal and the people around it.
Cats around resorts
Some Varadero resorts tolerate cats around gardens and terraces, while others discourage feeding near rooms, buffets and restaurants. Follow the property’s hygiene rules and avoid encouraging animals into guest or food-service areas.
Dogs in streets and beach areas
A calm-looking dog may still react to food, children, another animal or sudden movement. Supervise children closely and do not corner, chase or handle an unfamiliar dog.
Ways to help responsibly
- Ask a trusted local person or established animal group what is actually needed.
- Offer appropriate food only in a suitable location.
- Avoid cooked bones, chocolate, alcohol and heavily salted food.
- Support targeted veterinary or feeding initiatives rather than improvising an adoption.
- Do not transport an animal without verified airline, veterinary and customs requirements.
After a bite or scratch
- Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water.
- Use an antiseptic when available.
- Record where and when the exposure occurred.
- Contact travel insurance and a medical professional promptly.
- Do not wait for symptoms before asking about tetanus or rabies assessment.
Travelling with your own pet
Most resorts do not automatically accept pets. Confirm the airline, carrier dimensions, veterinary certificates, vaccinations, import/export documents, fees and written accommodation approval before booking.
