Compare CubacelTur, roaming, travel eSIMs and WiFi before travelling to Cuba, and keep offline backups for weak connectivity.
Cuba mobile internet: choose a main option and a backup
Compare CubacelTur, roaming, travel eSIMs and hotel WiFi before departure. None should be your only communication plan because power cuts and network congestion can interrupt service.
Quick comparison
| Option | Best for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| CubacelTur SIM | Local data and a Cuban number | Requires an unlocked compatible phone |
| Canadian roaming | Convenience | Coverage and pricing vary by carrier |
| Travel eSIM | Activation before departure | Still depends on a Cuban partner network |
| Hotel WiFi | Light resort use | Speed and coverage may change by area |
Before leaving Canada: make sure your phone will actually connect
Do these checks before you fly, while you still have reliable Internet. Cuba Travel currently lists 3G on band 8 (900 MHz) and 4G/LTE on band 3 (1800 MHz), so an unlocked phone should support those bands if you plan to use CubacelTur. A travel eSIM is different: confirm that the provider explicitly includes Cuba and remember that it still relies on a Cuban partner network.
- Check the lock status and network bands. Do not assume that an unlocked phone is automatically compatible.
- If using CubacelTur, pre-arrange the tourist SIM and keep the purchase confirmation. Cuba Travel says the temporary line includes mobile data, calls and SMS and is valid for 30 days from activation.
- Plan the pickup. Cuba Travel lists CubacelTur pickup points at international airports and ETECSA commercial offices; availability and opening arrangements should still be reconfirmed before travel.
- If using an eSIM, install it before departure but do not switch your primary line blindly. Keep your Canadian SIM available if you need SMS authentication, and disable expensive data roaming unless your Canadian plan includes Cuba.
- Prepare WhatsApp and offline access. Save essential contacts, download maps, hotel and airline documents, and keep authentication backup codes offline.
- Carry power backup. A charged power bank and cable matter because a working SIM or eSIM is useless when your phone cannot be charged during an outage.
Best setup: choose one main connection method and one fallback. For example, CubacelTur plus hotel WiFi, or a confirmed Cuba-compatible eSIM plus offline maps and printed emergency contacts.
